When we contemplate our health, typically we look first to exercise and our nutrition. As these are very important on our journey to creating a healthy lifestyle, what we think can be far more powerful to our health, or lack of. I believe our personalities dictate our natural propensity towards the half glass full, or the half glass empty mentality. Just like exercise and building lean muscle, its about consistency over time that grows our muscle cell (with the help of protein:). Same thing goes for our minds. If you want a better life, better health, more joy, less stress (Don't we all?) we have to train our minds to SEE the good in everything. Stopped at a traffic light for the 3rd or 4th time and running late for work? Tell yourself " I am so lucky to be employed and able to afford a car, next time I will leave a bit earlier to avoid the mounting stress over being late for work". Have debt and always stressed about your bills? Tell yourself "One day at a time, I can only do what I can today. I will start cutting back on non essential such as Starbucks and eating out 3-4 times a week and start taking that money and slowly paying off my debts" Are you behind "that person" in the grocery store who has 100 items and is counting out her money for her $287 grocer bill and you have 6 items and need to get home to cook, do laundry, etc " Tell yourself, "Ahhhhh, this is the only time I have alone today before I get home to a house full of responsibilities (Laundry, cooking, spouse or kid demands, etc) Over time when we get to that 3rd stoplight, or are in that long line, or are dealing with bills you will find yourself less stressed and able to walk in patience and understanding, as the world will always be filled with traffic, lines, and need. So how we think about it is the only thing in our control.
